By Chris Lynch, The Laser Lounge, Didcot
If you’re thinking about getting rid of a tattoo, or fading one enough to have it reworked, the first two questions are nearly always the same. How does it actually work? And how long will it take? Here’s an honest answer from our clinic in Great Western Park, Didcot, without the jargon and without promises nobody can keep.
How laser tattoo removal works
Tattoo ink sits in the dermis, the layer of skin below the surface. The ink particles are too large for your body to clear on its own, which is why a tattoo stays put for years.
A tattoo removal laser delivers energy in extremely short pulses. The ink absorbs that energy and breaks into smaller fragments, while the skin around it is largely left alone. Over the following weeks, your immune system gradually carries those smaller fragments away, and the tattoo fades.
That’s the part most people don’t expect: the fading doesn’t all happen on the day. The laser does its job in a few minutes. Your body does the rest between appointments.
How many sessions will I need?
Most tattoos need somewhere between 6 and 12 sessions, spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. So a full course usually runs over many months, and often longer than a year. It isn’t a quick fix, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling.
Why such a range? Every tattoo is different. The things that make the biggest difference are:
- Ink colour. Black and dark blue tend to respond best. Some colours, such as green, yellow and light blue, can be more stubborn.
- How much ink there is. Densely packed professional work usually takes longer than a lighter, older or amateur tattoo.
- Age of the tattoo. Older tattoos have often softened naturally over the years.
- Where it is. Areas with good circulation tend to clear more readily than hands, feet and ankles.
- Your skin and general health. Smoking, for example, can affect how well your skin heals.
- Previous cover-ups or layered work, which adds more ink to break down.
We look at all of this at your consultation and give you a realistic estimate for your tattoo, not a sales pitch.
Why sessions are spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart
It’s natural to want to go faster. But your skin needs time to heal, and your body needs time to clear the broken-down ink. Treating too soon doesn’t speed things up. It raises the risk of irritation, blistering and changes in skin colour, without clearing more ink. Here, patience genuinely gives you a better outcome.
Will my tattoo disappear completely?
We can’t promise that, and no responsible clinic should. Many tattoos fade a great deal over a course of treatment, and some clear to the point where they’re very hard to see. Others leave a faint shadow, often called ghosting, or a slight change in skin tone where the tattoo used to be. Results vary from person to person.
If your goal is to fade a tattoo enough for a new design over the top, you’ll usually need fewer sessions than for full removal. It’s worth telling us at the start, so we can plan around what you actually want.
What happens at your first visit
Everything begins with a consultation and patch test. We’ll go through your medical history, look closely at the tattoo, explain the possible side effects and talk about what’s realistic. Then we test a small area so we can see how your skin responds before a full treatment.
The consultation costs £30, and that deposit is taken off your first treatment. When you come back for the session itself, the laser part is quick. A small tattoo can take just a few minutes.
You can see our session and bundle prices on the laser tattoo removal page. As a guide, a single session on a tiny tattoo (1 to 3cm) is £70.
Who we see
People come to us for all sorts of reasons. A forearm piece that no longer feels like you. A name you’d rather not see every morning. A tattoo that’s in the way of a new job, or one you simply want lightened so it can be reworked. Whatever the reason, there’s no judgement here.
We treat adults aged 18 and over. If you’d feel more comfortable with a female practitioner, Hayley is available at weekends.
We’re based in Great Western Park, Didcot, and easy to reach from Abingdon, Wantage, Wallingford, Harwell, Milton Park, Sutton Courtenay and Oxford.
Frequently asked questions
How many sessions does laser tattoo removal take?
Most tattoos need 6 to 12 sessions, spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. We’ll give you a personal estimate once we’ve seen your tattoo and your skin.
Can a tattoo be removed in one session?
No. Breaking down ink and letting your body clear it takes several sessions. Be cautious of anyone promising one-session removal.
Can laser tattoo removal leave a scar?
There is a risk of side effects, including blistering, changes in skin colour and, less commonly, scarring. Following your aftercare carefully helps, and we’ll explain all of this before you decide.
How much does tattoo removal cost in Didcot?
Single sessions start at £70 for a tiny tattoo, and 6-session bundles bring the cost per session down. Full prices are on our tattoo removal page.
